The Laughing Club of Northeast Ohio was founded in 2002 by Carol Bailey Floyd. We are a group of people
who gather every Saturday morning at 10 AM at Taylor Memorial Library in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Our group
is modeled after various laughing clubs around the world inspired by Dr. Madan Kataria, a Physician from
Mumbai, India, who launched the first Laughter Club at a Park on March 13, 1995, with just a few of people.
How We Began
Here is Carol’s account of how she began The Laughing Club of Northeast Ohio…
One night in 2002, I couldn’t sleep and was cruising TV channels. I came upon a documentary on laughing clubs in Japan. John Cleese, from Monty Python, was standing in the middle of lots of Japanese people in a park. They were all pointing upraised hands at their heads and yelling “ha ha, ho ho, hee hee!” I thought it was hilarious, and invited a bunch of friends to join me at Hardesty Park in Akron, Ohio on the upcoming Saturday. We didn’t know what else to do except follow the lead of the Japanese laughers, which made us laugh even more. In about two weeks, a trained laughter leader joined us and shared some different and creative laughing exercises. Ever since then, we have made up a lot of the laughing exercises we use, like the time I came to Laughing Club in a Hawaiian shirt and Mary Ellen burst out with “aloha ha ha, aloha ha ha, aloha ha ha ha ha!”. We eventually moved to our current weekly meeting place at Taylor Memorial Library in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Our Mission Statement
“The Laughing Club promotes joy and well-being by spreading smiles, raising energy and creating
community through laughter.”
Anyone and everyone is invited to join us on any given Saturday.
